Just One More Before The Oscars: Independent Spirit Fluffy Awards 2016!

The finishing touches are on my Oscar dress and its emergency backup (Thank You Photoshop!). I’m all prepared. Hopefully the award hopefuls are, too. And welcome to my very first Independent Spirit Awards carpet report! It’s a blue carpet rather than a red one, so forgive me if I lapse because this is only the second blue carpet event I’ve ever covered. If I call it red, well, you know what I mean.

Category: Most Improved

Marisa Tomei in Stella McCartney

Last time I saw Marisa on a carpet, she was wearing a floral tragedy. Well, she’s still on the florals, but this little embroidered chemise is a big step in a better direction.

Category: Cutest

Emilia Clarke in Michael Kors

It’s so sparkly!  Emilia looks like a hot schoolmarm in this short dress and understated styling.

Category: The Blue Ribbon

Jessica Chastain in Elie Saab

This sapphire-blue stunner is absolutely gorgeous– no danger of blending into he carpet here! The necklace is eye-catching as well.

Category: Most Intricate

Brie Larson in Chanel

The beading on this halter dress is crazy ornate. Also I’m not sure if those are waist cutouts or the dress is actually a two-piece. Loving it– Brie is on her A-game yet again.
Category: The Effortless Award

Lauren Cohan in Alice+Olivia

Halters are a major trend this award season, and one of the best ways to casual up your look. Lauren looks fresh off the beach and so pretty.

Category: Most Brilliant

Jessica Biel in Roland Mouret

The exotic scarlet print on this cobalt gown is a delightful contrast, as is the yellow beading on the shoes. Just perfect!

Category: Not-So-Basic Black

Rooney Mara in Hugo Boss

Rooney keeps up the good work in this little black dress and strappy sandals, a very Parisian look that recalls mid-century Audrey Hepburn glamour while remaining completely modern.

Category: Most Dramatic

Nikki Reed in Etro

The crazy print works here, and its juxtaposition with the dark hunter green main color is such a standout. Add pleats and a split-front bodice and you’ve got visual interest for days!

Category: A Short Story

Frieda Pinto in Bibhu Mohapatra

This little dress is so cute! A periwinkle skirt color-blocked with a black bodice and pastel iris-print halter, paired with the awesomest black-and-yellow pumps. This is one of those dresses I could literally wear anywhere and I love it!

Category: Worst Dressed

Dree Hemingway in Chloe

There’s looking like you just stepped off the beach, and looking like you just stepped off your four-wheeler at the beach. This failed attempt at Boho just hangs there, with its warring pastels creeping through shirred trenches and explosions of hideous tassels. Ratty trainers complete the mess, and the poor cute Leiber clutch just looks out of place.

Category: Best Dressed

Rachel McAdams in Solace London

Yes!  This is pure win. It’s a literal tangerine dream. From the vivid vermilion bodice to the coral-colored belt, to the peaches-and-cream skirt, she looks like a beautiful tiger lily unfolding into the sunshine. Love love love it!

Special Category: The Fluffy Award

Cate Blanchett in Gucci

Gucci has some super-cute cartoony designs this year, and I love this one with its peacocks, koi fish, and bright flowers. This award is for the look that most closely hews to my own personal aesthetic, or which I’d have chosen for myself. I’m not a beige person at all, but here the beige is more of a naked backdrop for the colorful artwork. Cate wins again!

See you guys tomorrow for my Oscar roundup!  Excited yet? I sure am…
